Unaccompanied voices in harmony - about twenty singers - a wide range of modern music, world music, renaissance music, and anything that takes our interest - singing for pleasure, for the social fun, for the technical challenge, and for quality performances: that is the essence of Rudsambee.
Rudsambee is conducted by Ollie Singleton, who is (Spring 2009) about to complete his degree in music at the University of Edinburgh. Under his direction, our music has flourished and developed in unexpected directions, and we are enjoying bringing new surprises to our audiences with each concert. One recent concert, for example, featured the music of Veljo Tormis, Arvo Pärt, Debussy and Imogen Heap, plus Abbie Betinis' extraordinary Envoi, a Chinese setting (Green Fir Forest), a Swingle Singers' arrangement of The Star of the County Down, and Gaelic puirt a beul.
Regular performance venues include St Giles Cathedral, the Swallow Theatre near Whithorn, Rosslyn Chapel, and the National Portrait Gallery of Scotland (the last two of which are currently closed for refurbishment). Many more venues - including two Royal Gala Dinners attended by the Princess Royal - feature in our recent performances listing.
Rudsambee has produced five CDs.
We have enjoyed visits from Svatobor Choir from Sušice in the Czech Republic; from Grendakor from Nordås (Bergen), the Liga av Sang og Munterhed, Kammerkoret Cantemus, Tjølling Sangforening, Straumsnes Songlag and Abildsø Bygdekor, all from Norway; and from Københavns Folkekor from Denmark.
Our own travels have taken us to Sušice, Sligo (Ireland), Coleraine (Northern Ireland), Stavanger and Arendal (Norway), and Arran, as well as two tours of venues in the North-West of Scotland, with support from Awards for All and Highlands and Islands Arts.
